Closing down
The timber mill at Corryong will close by September, once the existing log stock is milled. It will be the end of an era for Walkers Sawmill after 87 years of operation under three generations of the family. Current owner, Graham Walker, was in Corryong on Friday to announce the closure of the mill to its 21 employees.

Graham Walker. I came to Corryong last Friday to announce to the employees that our sawmill will close once the existing log stock is milled. The gloomy sky over our log stack showed how I was feeling as I delivered the bad news ... If we were to continue business as usual, we had no certainty of sawlog quantity from VicForests as they are still embroiled in battle with ‘Friends of the Forest’ and court injunctions and they had only guaranteed 55 per cent of our 19,000m3 allocation.
Blues set the benchmark

First to fall remembered
In his welcome to the Anzac Day service in Corryong on Tuesday, RSL sub-branch secretary, Greg Nankervis, told of how two towns half a world apart were honouring the memory of a young Upper Murray soldier this year. Malcolm Chisholm was the first Australian to die and the first of some 60,000 Australians who lost their lives on the First World War battlefields.
Haines updated on community projects
Independent Federal Member for Indi, Helen Haines, visited the Upper Murray last week, receiving progress reports on bushfire recovery projects including the new battery and solar energy system at Corryong Health, the Playles Hill Park project and the Tintaldra Recreation Reserve upgrade ... "It will address the reliability, vulnerability and variability of the region’s electricity supply, which in the 2019-2020 bushfires meant power-outages lasted for weeks in Corryong and district including loss of communications": Independent Federal Member for Indi, Helen Haines.
Bike duo nails quinella
Local riders Riley Bloom and his best mate Layne Klippel scooped the pool at the Holbrook Motorcycle Sports Club ‘Leaping Logs’ competition on the weekend. Riley took out 1st place in the Junior Senior class, very closely followed by Layne in a memorable finish for the pair.
Son of a gun salutes
After completing his apprenticeship in the junior ranks by winning two titles in 2028 an 2019, Tooma-based horseman Travis Bandy has taken out the senior Stockman’s Challenge at this year’s Man From Snowy River Bush Festival. Travis is following in his father Scott’s footsteps, a five-time victor of the prestigious event.
