Wetlands woodland is taking shape
Friends of the Corryong Wetlands recently conducted a tree planting day as part of its native flora re-vegetation project ... we were greatly surprised and encouraged when 19 turned up! "We would like to say a big thank you to everybody who participated": project coordinator, John Murphy.
Dancer takes aim at state titles
Continuing her good form, Sarah Jarvis recently wrapped up her metropolitan solo campaign at the 2023 Calisthenics State Championships at The Besen Centre in Burwood. This was her fifth and final competition in the 17 Years Open Reserve Division, against dancers from all around Victoria.
Region rises from the ashes
A hidden waterfall nestled in the heart of the Upper Murray that emerged from the ashes following the 2019/20 Black Summer Bushfires is just one of several recovery projects now coming to fruition. The region was devastated by the bushfires and the pandemic lockdowns caused significant delays to the recovery process but replacement housing as well as a host of new projects are well underway or have been completed. One of the gems brought to light after the fires is Thowgla Falls, which is located on Marginal Road in the Thowgla Valley.
Pioneers remembered on walk
On Sunday the Upper Murray Historical Society conducted a Corryong Pioneer Cemetery Walk, the first since 2018. The society was well-pleased with the community support with attendance estimated in the high 40s. Six early pioneers were remembered on the walk. The first grave visited was that of Elizabeth Playle, one of the founding members of Corryong.
Closing down
The timber mill at Corryong will close by September, once the existing log stock is milled. It will be the end of an era for Walkers Sawmill after 87 years of operation under three generations of the family. Current owner, Graham Walker, was in Corryong on Friday to announce the closure of the mill to its 21 employees.

Graham Walker. I came to Corryong last Friday to announce to the employees that our sawmill will close once the existing log stock is milled. The gloomy sky over our log stack showed how I was feeling as I delivered the bad news ... If we were to continue business as usual, we had no certainty of sawlog quantity from VicForests as they are still embroiled in battle with ‘Friends of the Forest’ and court injunctions and they had only guaranteed 55 per cent of our 19,000m3 allocation.
Blues set the benchmark
Cudgewa has put the rest of the competition on notice that it is the team to beat this season after racking up another percentage builder against Corryong on Saturday ... Cudgewa’s potent attack proved unstoppable with Ben Hall atoning for a poor effort from round one with seven goals which was matched by star recruit, Adam Prior, who also booted seven majors...
