Mates paddle for vets

Three men who have experienced conflict first hand have banded together to kayak the length of the Murray River to raise awareness of Soldier On and MatesHeroHelp, two charities supporting current and former defence personnel.

This year marks 130 years since the Corryong Courier first hit the streets to bring all the news to the people of the Upper Murray. The first issue of the Courier was on January 25, 1894 and since then has only undergone six changes of ownership.

Strategy champions new opportunities

Launched in February 2023, ‘Innovation Upper Murray’ is an exciting new project for the region, that locals can join now ... it aims to help the Upper Murray community and businesses identify opportunities for innovation, economic diversification and undertake long-term planning. The involvement of government and research bodies in the process, to support the successful adoption of initiatives, makes it a (place-based) method called Smart Specialisation Strategy (or ‘S3’).

Community spirit has been key to hall success

In 1958, the Athenaeum Hall site was completely cleared except for the front concrete steps leading up to the main entrance and prepared for the construction of the present edifice, the Corryong & District Public Memorial Hall ... When plans were approved this building was the biggest single community hall (in floor area) in rural Victoria.

Artworks enchant travellers

Towong Shire Council is encouraging residents and visitors to discover the newly installed large-scale artworks along the Great River Road, which were unveiled in late December. Towong mayor, Cr Andrew Whitehead, emphasised council’s commitment to the project, providing an enjoyable experience for travellers, allowing them to appreciate the scenery of shire.

Evacuation centre delay “unfathomable”

The collective community recovery committees in the Upper Murray have taken the Towong Shire Council to task over the lack of action in establishing evacuation centres in Corryong, more than four years after the devastating 2019-20 Black Summer bushfires.
