Councils take hospital fight to the streets
Towong Shire Councillors and members of the community, along with representation from other northern rural councils, assembled at a rally on the steps of Parliament House in Melbourne yesterday to push for a greenfield site for a new Albury-Wodonga hospital. The current proposal for the new Albury Wodonga regional hospital is simply inadequate, according to Towong Shire mayor, Cr Andrew Whitehead.
Local hope looks to go back to back
A big weekend is looming for first-time author, Dixie Coutts, whose book on the history of the Towong Turf Club will be launched on the eve of this year’s Cup meeting. She is also a part owner of 2024 winner Euphemia who is aiming for a repeat sucess on Saturday to join a select group to have won multiple cups.

Early drizzle failed to dampen the enthusiasm of the capacity field in the Corryong Open tournament on Sunday and competition was fierce in all grades as the heat and humidity ramped up, none more so than the battle for the Open title which was decided by a playoff … Wayne Dubois, has been the player to beat on the Hills Zone circuit recently and maintained that form to post a 77 off the stick and looked the likely winner.
It’s just not good enough! Mayor makes call to action
The current proposal for the new Albury Wodonga regional hospital is simply inadequate, according to Towong Shire mayor, Cr Andrew Whitehead. "The redevelopment proposed will barely meet current demand let alone the future demands for a region of 300,000 people," he said. ... "We are demanding the healthcare service and facilities our community deserves," Cr Whitehead said.

Pilots love flying here
The recent Corryong Paragliding Open - a round of the Australian championships - once again proved popular with flyers and spectators although a couple of mishaps during competition could have had more serious consequences. "The Corryong area is a world class flying area and Mt Elliot is one of the best paragliding and hangliding mountains in Australia," said Dave Gibbs from competition host Airtribune.
Race tales paint a vivid history
The storied 150-year history of the Towong Turf Club has been encapsulated in a new book by local author, Dixie Coutts, which is to be launched on the eve of this year’s Towong Cup. ‘Towong Turf Club Tales’ tells the story of an institution that grew from races on the river flats before the turn of the 20th century to become a significant piece of the heritage of the Upper Murray.
Pilot should not have been flying
A Victorian coroner has ruled a pilot who died in a crash near Lucyvale should not have been issued with a licence because of his limited flying experience. Cinematographer and adventurer, Matthew Farrell (42) died in a light sport aircraft crash at Lucyvale on September 18, 2022.
