Council seeks collaborators to address housing shortage
West Wimmera Shire Council is calling on individuals, investors and businesses to help address housing shortages in the region. Council has been working in close collaboration with Wimmera Southern Mallee Development for several years to explore ways to attract investment in the shire’s housing sector.
Kaniva’s Louise Hobbs to represent Victoria
Kaniva A&P Society’s Louise Hobbs, representing the Wimmera Agricultural Society, has won the 2023 Victorian Agricultural Society’s Rural Youth Ambassador Award ... The award is given to a 20-30-year old with outstanding participation in their local community and show, acting as an ambassador for the agricultural shows movement.
Nhill Lake bore update
Nhill Free Press and Kaniva Times contacted GWM water for an update on the Nhill Lake’s Bore. A new lakeside bore at Nhill Lake will replace the existing infrastructure and secure a more reliable water supply for the lake.

Students get climate-action ready at Horsham
Agriculture Victoria’s Horsham SmartFarm recently provided local students hands-on experience of climate action research, with a focus on preserving important grains and plants for the future. The visit was by a group of students who are currently studying Agricultural and Horticultural Science at Goroke P-12 College.
Nhill’s “Big Red”
Meet the Immortal River Red Gum – a heritage-listed tree on the Mallee Dam Road, adjoining Mount Elgin Swamp. It’s one of the thickest, tallest, and oldest River Red Gums (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) in Victoria and can be found 13 km south of Nhill. The National Trust estimates the tree is about 400 years old and has been listed as a significant tree because it is particularly old and because of its outstanding size.
New X-Ray machine marks the spot!
Thanks to overwhelming support from the communities it serves, West Wimmera Health Service has unveiled and commenced using its new X-Ray machine. The new digital X-Ray machine offers shorter exposure times, more accurate imaging, faster examination times, and reduced radiation dose.
