Courthouse Gallery exhibition

Recent stories

Bold, thought-provoking works by Charlton artist, Sonya Hindson, will be on display at the Charlton Courthouse Gallery this February, with organisers expecting strong interest from both locals and visitors to the town.

Sonya’s upcoming exhibition and sale showcases a vibrant body of work known for its use of collage, symbolism and striking colour. Her art invites viewers to pause, reflect and question familiar ideas, often placing contrasting images side by side to create new meanings.

Gallery secretary, Carolyn Olive, said Sonya’s work was an exciting fit for the February exhibition calendar.

“February brings a huge number of people to town for OK Motels, and we felt Sonya’s bold and contemporary work would really appeal to that audience,” Carolyn said. “It’s exactly the sort of exhibition that makes people stop in, spend time at the gallery and talk about what they’ve seen.”

The gallery continues to focus on presenting exhibitions that reflect the strength and diversity of local and regional artists, while also enhancing Charlton’s appeal as a cultural destination.

Sonya draws on a lifetime of creative influences and personal experiences. Her work often combines vintage imagery, hand-drawn elements and layered textures to create pieces that feel both familiar and unsettling, encouraging viewers to engage on an emotional and intellectual level.

The exhibition will officially open on Sunday, February 15, at 3.00 p.m., with all welcome to attend. Gallery opening times will follow over selected weekends throughout February and March.

Thanks to funding received from the Coonooer Bridge Windfarm, the Gallery will be nice and cool with the installation of air-conditioning and ceiling fans in the main courtroom.

“This is long overdue,” Carolyn explains. “Last February was just too hot to be comfortable in the Gallery. This will make conditions much more pleasant in summer and winter for our visitors and our volunteers.”

The Charlton Courthouse Gallery is located at 8 Camp Street. Sales will be available by cash or EFTPOS. Please note the gallery is not wheelchair accessible.
