Tom Lee to be honoured at final Narrandera race meeting for season

Recent stories

It is very appropriate that the Narrandera Race Club Community race meeting on Saturday is sponsored by the Narrandera Ex-servicemans Club and named the TC Lee OAM Memorial meeting.

Tom was a long time executive and fund-raiser for Legacy based out of the NESC and he was passionate to help wives and husbands of returned services personal and their families during their post war service lives.

He was made a life member of NRC in 1979 and later was nominated by NRC and other organisations for a Queen’s Australia day award. He was inducted as a OAM in Sydney by then Governor of NSW Dame Marie Bashir, formerly of Narrandera.

Tom was a loyal chief clerk at Narrandera Hospital and a special part of the Narrandera Rugby League Club the Lizards both at senior and junior levels.

The Lee racing heritage has continued on with his wife Gwen an ongoing active supporter and this year his granddaughter Cassie Jess did an outstanding job with organising and coordinating the club’s Fashions extravaganza on Cup Day.

This Saturday the Narrandera Exservicemans Club TCLee OAM Memorial race meeting will be conducted.

The Exies itself is a great supporter of the Race Club and the ever expanding relationship with the growth of the NRC Cup Calcutta is a great example of the town working together for the betterment of all.

The NIFC and the Bowling also support the Cup weekend.

Saturday’s time honoured meeting recognises the outstanding contribution Tom Lee made a life member (1979) of NRC and his service to the Narrandera community.

The six race program will commence around 12.30 with gates opening at 11am. Everyone is invited to take advantage of the free entry to the races and come and have a great day out.

The club is looking forward to hosting whoever wins the owner for a day promotion and hopefully trainer Craig Weeding can produce a winner for the lucky raffle winner.

The raffle will be drawn Tuesday morning and the result will be on Facebook and in the Narrandera Argus. The winner will also be contacted directly following the draw.

“The Club winds up another very successful winter season officially but you never know what the racing weather gods may deliver. We also have applied for a Christmas meeting but that’s a pretty long shot to come to fruition,” said Race Club secretary Michael Bailey.

“The club wishes to thank our major sponsor the Community Bank and we also thank Jack Langley for his support of fashions on Cup day.”

The Lee family will be represented on the day for the presentation of the TCLee memorial trophy to the winning owner.

“Thank you Cassie Jess for your fantastic organisation of the fashions on cup day at short notice – the Club really appreciated your efforts. I am sure Tom would be very proud to have a granddaughter involved in the club,” said Michael.

“Please support all our wonderful sponsors and the club by coming out Saturday – the curtains will be drawn, the heaters turned up, plenty of hot food and cold drinks available as well as bookies, TAB and great racing.”
