Nhill Fire Brigade raised an incredible amount of funds for two vital appliances: a new light tanker and the replacement forward command vehicle were officially handed over to Nhill Fire Brigade in Nhill by D17 ACFO Chris Eagle on Sunday 18th May 2025.
Captain of Nhill Fire Brigade Rob Schneider said, “These vehicles are more than just upgraded equipment, they are a direct investment in the safety and resilience of our community. For that, we offer our sincere thanks to the Victorian government, and specifically acknowledge the support provided through the volunteer Emergency Services Equipment Program (VESEP).”
Rob said, “Programs like VESEP ensure that local brigades like ours are properly equipped to do the job we’re trained to do — whether that’s responding to grass fires, structure fires, road accidents, or providing support to neighbouring communities during larger-scale emergencies.
The Nhill Fire Brigade has a proud and enduring history, first established in May 1888, now over 137 years. The Nhill Brigade has stood as a cornerstone of safety, resilience, and has grown into a strong and capable unit of 36 active members.
Brendan Moylan concluded the event citing that the ceremony was an opportunity to not only celebrate a specific milestone of two new vehicles but also to reflect on the spirit of service that drives every volunteer here. It is a spirit that builds generations, and one that continues to inspire pride across Nhill and beyond. Our presence has helped build awareness, foster trust, and strengthen community ties.
The Volunteer Emergency Services Equipment Program (VESEP) is an annual grants program funded by the Victorian Government, which provides funding to Victorian emergency services volunteer groups to purchase essential operational equipment, vehicles, and appliances, and minor facility improvements.
Victorian Volunteer Emergency Service groups can apply for a grant up to a maximum of $150,000 excluding GST. The VESEP will provide $2 for every $1 of funding contributed by the local volunteer group.
The Nhill Fire Brigade would like the community to know that these new vehicles have been in the pipeline for over six years. Throughout this time, an enormous amount of work has gone into grant applications and fundraising — driven by the dedicated efforts of our Brigade and CFA District 17 staff. Every dollar of the $67,000 brigade contribution raised has come directly from our fantastic, supportive community, of which we are proudly a part.
We sincerely thank you for your ongoing support. We want to reassure you that, despite the current direction of the government regarding the Emergency Services and Volunteers Fund—something we do not support—the Nhill Fire Brigade will always be here to serve and protect our community when needed.
Thank you again for standing with us.
