Toowoomba’s 2032 Olympics future is in question following Monday’s announcement by Premier Steven Miles that plans to upgrade Toowoomba Sports Ground (Clive Berghofer Stadium) will not proceed.
Premier Miles made the announcement on Monday, following the release of the 60-day Sport Venue Review of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games venue infrastructure completed by an independent panel led by former Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk.
The panel recommended the stadium facility upgrade not to proceed and instead to consider other events to be held in the region, which the Queensland Government accepted.
Upgrades to stadiums in Townsville and Cairns will proceed without change.
The Queensland Government accepted 27 of 30 recommendations from the panel.
“No one wants to see money spent on facilities that are only needed for four weeks,” Premier Miles said.
“Instead, this new direction will deliver decades of benefit to local schools, community athletics programs and Olympic and Paralympic athletes in 2032 and beyond.”
