Marooned in Castlemaine
On 2 September, The Wolves Theatre Company are bringing their play, Marooned, to Castlemaine. Marooned is an Australian play that The Sydney Morning Herald called, “A play about suicide that needs to be seen”.
Local business donating hundreds of meals to those in need
The last two and a half years have taken so much from so many, and so Mardi Brown and Pete Gurrie, owners of Sunday House, wanting to find a meaningful way to contribute to the community, have launched an initiative to donate fresh meals for every direct booking made. The money raised will go towards assisting vulnerable people across the country via the superheroes at SecondBite, one of Australia’s largest food rescue organisations.
Cats coach Maldon!
It’s not often that locals get the chance to rub shoulders with footballing legends, but this is what happened when ex-Geelong players Matthew Scarlett and Darren Milburn came to MFNC training last Thursday night. They were generous with their time and gave sound advice to both junior and senior footballers. Both defenders, Matthew and Darren were outstanding players at a time when Geelong was one of the best teams in the competition.
Maldon’s Little Library
On the corner of Allans Road and High Street is a little library that is crammed full of books waiting to be read. It’s the brainchild of local residents Doug and Glenda, who created it just before the pandemic arrived. During Covid, when the Athenaeum Library and the Castlemaine Library were closed, Doug’s and Glenda’s library was many a reader’s salvation.

Castlemaine Central Wine Store specialises in wine from small and medium-sized producers (mostly family owned and operated) from around Victoria. You will find a wide range of varietals such as Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon - surely specialties of our part of Central Victoria - to wines made from less well-known grapes including Durif, Grenache, Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Tempranillo, Mataro and of course Pinot Noir.
Take A Breath Wellness Studio
Welshman’s Reef resident, and experienced yoga teacher, Amy Sonsie, opened Take a Breath Wellness Studio at the beginning of 2022. Amy offers a range of well-being services to people who are feeling overwhelmed and need valuable skills to help in times of stress, mental illness, and anxiety.
Raising funds to fight depression, post traumatic stress and suicide
On Saturday 10 September Maldon’s CFA Captain, Sean McCubbin, and 600 other firefighters and emergency services personnel will be climbing the 28 floors of Crown Metropol Hotel to raise funds for mental health. Participants will be wearing 25kgs of turnout gear and breathing apparatus as they climb the steps for the ninth annual Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb, which aims to break down the stigma around mental health, and be a leader in the emergency services community in the mental health space.
Celebrating 100 years on the railway
The Retired Railway Employees Association celebrated 100 years last week, with a visit to Maldon on the Victorian Goldfields Railway ... The group meets monthly and has regular social outings, but this year it was considered appropriate to celebrate the past 100 years by travelling on a steam train.
