Hailstorm damage in Maldon
The Castlemaine SES were called out on Monday 2 January in response to calls for help after a freak hail storm swept through Maldon and surrounds ... The largest of the hail stones were the size of a billiard ball, while others had been measured at 4cm in diameter.
Rocking horse restoration
Allan Trounson, 91 years young, is helping restore a very old rocking horse with his mates at the Maldon Men’s Shed ... This horse’s owner wants to keep it as a reminder of her childhood and has tasked the Men’s Shed with the restoration of this beautiful piece of history.
Firefighting choppers arrived
In preparation for summer fires, two firefighting helicopters arrived in Bendigo this week. The helicopters will be used throughout the bushfire season by Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) and Country Fire Authority (CFA) to respond to fires across Central Victoria.
Woolies to go ahead
The proposed Woolworths supermarket in Castlemaine will go ahead after the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) ruled in favour of the construction. A long debate has prevailed, with Council and many locals opposed to the development.
Bruce – back where he belongs
The rescue of Bruce the macaw has been in the news recently after his escape and rescue by the CFA. The Times paid a visit to the Maldon Takeaway where he resides during the week to see how Bruce was coping after his misadventure, and all seems to be well.
100th gold bar pouring
Kaiser Reef’s 100th gold bar was poured at The Porcupine Flat Processing Plant in Maldon last week. The  Times  was lucky enough to be there to record the exciting moment ... Processing Manager Dylan Morgan, dressed in his protective fireproof coat and PPE, poured out the molten lava-like mix which was the liquid gold. Â

A History of the Castlemaine to Maryborough Railway  is a recently published book written by Ken James and David Langley. At 428 pages, it’s a doorstopper of a book that is painstakingly researched, well-illustrated and comprehensive in its scope. For railway tragics and history buffs, it’s a must-buy; and for others, it’s a cracking good read.
Maldon Inc Christmas party
Maldon Inc held a special Christmas celebration at the Panacea Estate Winery last Saturday for members to meet and mingle with the new committee.  The new Maldon Inc committee’s mission is to bring members together to build ‘Stronger Business, Stronger Community, and a Stronger Maldon’, and the committee is looking forward to putting many of its plans into action in 2023.
