Great southern lights

August has been an exceptional month for aurora-spotting and photographers have been sharing their extraordinary images online, making everyone else glance skyward with envy. With its elevated position and lack of light pollution, Mount Tarrengower has been a perfect place from which to capture these night rainbows, as Karen Cordell showed in this gorgeous photo that she took with her phone last week.

Golf tournament

The Maldon Golf Club Annual Tournament takes place this coming weekend ... is expected to attract players from across the state and beyond. Club Secretary Bob Briggs says that up to 180 golfers from over 20 regional clubs will be represented. "Most district clubs try to support each other," he says. "They come to Maldon and have a day away."

Lyster Opera is excited to return to Daylesford in this new production of Rossini’s hilarious comedy The Italian Girl in Algiers ... Director Jamie Moffat says this early work by Rossini is rarely performed because it is technically very difficult ... “We are very lucky to have assembled a cast who can really do the score justice.”

Truck petition en route to Parliament

The Maldon Heavy Traffic Petition commenced a new leg of its journey to Parliament last week, when members of the Maldon Traffic Group (MTG) presented the document to the Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards. The petition, which requests a comprehensive State Government review into the nature and level of heavy vehicle traffic through Maldon, was prompted by concerns for pedestrian and driver safety ...

Making Maldon a business hub

An upcoming business expo plans to put Maldon on the map at the centre of a network of small towns ... “This expo is not just for Maldon, but to connect with other small towns. Most resources go to larger towns. Glorious gothic gathering

The Goldfields Gothic Festival took place last weekend and was once again a perfectly sombre, solemn and melancholy event; attendees had a wonderful time and the organisers declared it a success … Under the steam of Peter Thompson and a number of key helpers — including Sasha Cuha, Gabrielle Kelly and a crew wearing top hats — most of the main events in 2024 took place at the Maldon Vintage Machinery and Museum.

Wearable art turning heads in Maldon Gallery

Michelle Dorian. The delicate creations displayed in Maldon’s MANet Gallery are intricate, sculptural artworks and they are also hats. The wearable pieces were created by Noelle Elizabeth, who trained in Fine Arts at Ballarat University before pursuing a passion for historical headgear.

Homelessness week vigil

The community is invited to attend a vigil to honour those in our community who are homeless ... According to Mr Michael McMahon, Senior Housing Team Worker, on any given night there are 78 homeless community members in Mount Alexander Shire, tens of people sleeping rough and over 250 families seeking support for crisis housing.
