Baaka Cultural Centre progressing well
Central Darling Shire Council has received a project update on the Baaka Cultural Centre. The development of the $9.5 million Baaka Cultural Centre at Wilcannia is a regionally significant project. It is being funded by the Australian and NSW governments.
Cross country
The annual Combined Wilcannia Cross Country Run was held last Friday. All students did their best and many exceeded their own best times from 2023. Well done to Jarren who saw a friend in need and gave Todd a piggyback for the final leg of the race.
Council welcomes $10 million funding for water treatment plants
In July last year the construction of much-needed new water treatment plants for Ivanhoe and Wilcannia was put in doubt because of a funding shortfall. Today NSW Senator Deb O'Neill visited Wilcannia to announce $10 million in additional funding for water treatment plants at White Cliffs, Wilcannia and Ivanhoe and new potable water rearticulation scheme at White Cliffs.
Careers day 2024
On the 8th April students from Wilcannia Central School and St Therese’s Mission School were given the opportunity to meet with employers and training organisations, be informed about careers and discover practical ways to engage in immediate and future career opportunities at the Wilcannia Career Expo.
Local participant in the stone conservation course
Mark Curry has just completed the Heritage conservation skills course and been awarded a certificate. In this course he has learnt about Stone conservation, breathable paints, lime mortar technology, solid rendering and re-pointing, The class of 14 participants have transformed the upper facade of the Pirie Chambers building in Argent Street Broken Hill.
Maari Ma Health Centre opens
In a fitting opening, two local residents cut the ribbon to declare the new $9m Maari Ma Aboriginal Health Care building officially opened. Shirely Evans and Ngearie Cattermole cut the ribbon and then the cake ... With the holistic concept of the centre, Maari Ma is providing culturally appropriate health services.

As part of the weir project Water Infrastructure contracted to an archaeological consulting firm to conduct excavations on a number of sites that may fall with the footprint of the weir and construction zones ... Wilcannia Local Aboriginal Land Council and the Barkindji Native Title Group were consulted and a number of members received training on how to sift the soil from the holes...
