New business lands in Napranum

A Brisbane building company is setting up a satellite office in Napranum as it looks to win public housing contracts in Cape York. Cowie Group representatives spent two weeks travelling between Napranum and Mapoon to speak with locals as they look to establish long-term contracts.

There was no such thing as COVID-19 the last time our so-called Member for Cook Cynthia Lui visited Weipa. It’s been some 530 days since the MP last flew out of Weipa Airport after a whirlwind trip to Weipa and Napranum. That was on August 28, 2019.

Imagine if we actually copped a cyclone? The weather was wet and a little wild on the Western Cape last week but not even close to cyclonic. Yet phones dropped out for a 10-hour period and the barge was late on arrival (twice) into Weipa. Shoppers hoping to procure fruit and vegetables on Saturday morning left disappointed as not only did the Sea Swift barge turn up late into port, but couldn’t offload due to a mechanical breakdown.

No vacancy – rental, child care shortage hurting Weipa

A lack of rental properties and adequate child care is the biggest issue facing Weipa in 2021. The town is capable of growth and there are a number of vacant job positions, but nowhere to accommodate new arrivals.

Nine new citizens to take the pledge on Australia Day

Renu Ayyappan will proudly take the pledge of allegiance and become an Australian citizen tomorrow She will be one of nine new Australians to be granted citizenship at Weipa Town Authority's Australia Day festivities. Renu moved to Australia from India in 2015 with husband Saravanan Asaithambi and has lived in Weipa for more than two years. "I love it here. This is home for me," she said ahead of her pending citizenship ceremony. "I want to be part of the Australian culture and want our kids to grow up here."
