Bottoms up for the final time

As they closed the doors for the last time on Tuesday, it was a sad but memorable occasion for Corryong Hotel Motel publicans Wendy Kirley and Peter 'Pockets' Kasuba. The couple had a rocky start to their venture, taking over the lease of the 'Bottom Pub' in September 2020 during the pandemic restrictions but they have since developed the business and clientele.

Community connects through hardship

The Upper Murray community gathered in solidarity at the Corryong Events Centre on Friday night to support one another and those who have suffered loss and hardships since the 2019-20 bushfires. The fourth Corryong Spirit event carried the message of 'Shining a Light into the Darkness' and the guest speakers reinforced that sentiment.

Community backs hospital protest

"People in our region have stopped calling 000 altogether, instead driving loved ones with seizures, chest pain or trauma to hospital themselves because they simply do not believe an ambulance will get there in time. Directly because of this lack of beds, we have seen elderly patients from Corryong discharged from Albury Wodonga Health in the middle of the night with no transport, no money and no plan": Stan Stavros, Better Border Health.

Local wordsmiths bring the heat

A well known Upper Murray bush poet and author who has embraced a relatively new genre - the Poetry Slam - has progressed to the Victorian state final. Jan Lewis and Asha Romero were selected to advance to the final after competing in the Towong Shire heat on Saturday at Tallangatta, which was hosted by poet Andrew Cox.
