Nariel woman, Joy Bennetts, will be one of 30 participants from the region who will participate in the Centenary of Legacy Torch Relay which will travel through the streets of Wodonga and Albury on Saturday 5th August. The local torch bearers all have a connection to Legacy or the Australian Defence Force ... King Charles helped kick off the London leg of the Legacy relay.
More firefighters needed for region
Forest Fire Management (FFMVic) is looking for people across north east Victoria who are keen to work outdoors, learn new skills and help protect the community and the environment. Applications are now open for project firefighter roles across 18 locations including Corryong, Tallangatta, Mitta Mitta, Alexandra, Marysville, Toolangi, Broadford, King-lake, Benalla, Mansfield, Wangaratta, Yarrawonga, Nathalia, Shepparton, Beechworth, Bright, Ovens and Mount Beauty.
Children’s book resonates with all ages
The author of a book about a young girl growing up beside the Murray River during The Great Depression is coming to Corryong to talk about her work. Cathy Hope’s book ‘Murray River Girl’ is a true story about Roma, the daughter of a swagman and shearer’s cook, who lived in a makeshift tent beside the river until she was eleven years old.
New bridge is good to go
The Towong Bridge will soon be open to traffic after being closed for more than a year. Residents and landowners on both sides of the Murray River will be bouyed by news that the new Towong Bridge will be officially opened next week after being closed for more than a year.

Blues show no mercy in drubbing
After a scare last week against Tumbarumba, Cudgewa wreaked havoc on a hapless Corryong on Saturday with the much vaunted Blues’ key forward setup of Drew Cameron, Adam Prior and Josh Bartel posting 24 of their 35 goals in a 203-point demolition. With Darcy McKimmie, Mitch Pynappels and Drew Carey running riot from the first bounce the Blues attack feasted on the delivery to rack up 20 goals by the long break to the opposition’s one.
Towong will suffer from new tax
The Windfall Gains Tax that comes into effect next week is a nail in the coffin of residential development in the Towong Shire, says Member for Benambra Bill Tilley. "Labor’s latest tax - one of more than 50 since they came to power in 2014 - will slug landowners of rezoned land up to 50 per cent of its new value," Mr Tilley said.
