Mallee on high alert for mouse outbreak this season
Grain growers in Victoria’s Mallee region are being urged to ‘walk through paddocks’ to check for signs of mouse activity and crop damage and apply bait where necessary to help drive down numbers before spring.

One million tonnes of new storage in time for harvest
GrainCorp plans to build one million tonnes of new storage capacity at several sites ahead of the 2021-22 winter crop harvest. Following last year’s bumper crop where more than 60 GrainCorp sites broke all-time receival records, the agribusiness is expanding its regional network, which stretches across Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria.
Diamantina National Park de-fenced
Close to 300km of old barbed-wire fencing along Diamantina National Park has been removed to protect native animals including the rare night parrot ... The fencing was installed by farmers to manage livestock before the park was purchased by the Queensland Government in 1992. “It’s been close to 30 years since the land was transformed into 507,000 hectare national park, and in that time we’ve seen many resident and migratory bird species return to the local wetlands, which act as a haven in an otherwise arid region,” Minister Scanlon said.
Global sustainability goals welcomed
Australia’s Beef Sustainability Framework has welcomed the goals recently announced by the Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef. The GRSB, a worldwide network of organisations powering progress in sustainable beef, announced a commitment to reduce net global warming impact of beef by 30% by 2030 through global sustainability goals.
