Nic snaps up WA’s top portrait prize
Serena Kirby. Photographer Nic Duncan recently collected the best portrait print award and the Izzy Orloff award for overall best portrait in WA’s 2023 Pro Photography competition. The winning image for both awards was of Denmark man Andre Steyl who Nic said had been one of her all time favourite faces to photograph.

Patricia Gill. Public servant of 30-plus years, Albany Noongar man Ken Kelly, says a Voice to Parliament will improve social outcomes and reduce future costs. Speaking at the Yes Campaign Walk on September 30, Mr Kelly sees a Voice as a way of keeping the Government of the day on track.
Matt’s whisky comes with a twist
Denmark's first whisky and rum distillery will open early next year at Raintree Farm’s The Dam restaurant. The announcement comes as the first-release single-malt whisky reaches its final months of a two-year ageing process.
Dog walkers urged to respect nesting birds
Patricia Gill. Walkers are asked to curb their dogs around incubating hooded plover chicks after a fence and signs warning of nesting parent birds were stolen at Lights Beach. BirdLife Australia beach-nesting birds project ofï¬cer Lisa Nicholson assured dog-walkers that the rope fence and signs were only temporary and the eastern side of Lights Beach would not be closed to dogs.
Green light for $5m ‘cannabis’ health retreat
The Denmark Shire Council has given the green light to the building of a $5 million health retreat at The Dam on Raintree Estate 10km west of Denmark. Billed as Australia’s first cannabis health retreat the development includes a reception, lodge, six two-bedroom chalets and six off-grid eco-huts.
