A prospect of independent power
GWMWater has recently provided an update on a study entitled “Donald Community Power Plant Study” investigating the feasibility of a community power plant and potential microgrid infrastructure to supply the residents of Donald with locally harvested and stored green energy. This is not the first time the concept has been investigated for the town.
Cohuna Carp Catch is back
The North Central Catchment Management Authority’s (CMA) Native Fish Recovery Program is hosting the popular event on Gunbower Creek at the Gateway Information Centre end of Garden Park on Sunday, October 27. From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., there will be heaps of prizes based on the size and number of carp caught, as well as water bug activities, colouring tents, turtle and native fish displays, and a free lunch.
“Perfect Trifecta” for river fish
While punters look to find the best bets on racecourses across the state, the perfect trifecta could be within the banks of three northern Victorian waterways. Water for the environment will flow down the Loddon River, Serpentine Creek, and Pyramid Creek during October, to provide local native fish with a party of their own. Environmental water releases from Laanecoorie Reservoir will begin in early October, targeting flows of 400 megalitres a day.
“Royalty” races to mountain top
The Riordan King and Queen of Mount Wycheproof hold on to their titles for the second year in a row since the event’s resurrection from the eighties ... the world’s smallest mountain roared to life with anticipation and support of the unusual, yet gruelling race, where runners carry bags of Mallee’s finest wheat 1km to the summit of Mount Wycheproof, as quickly as they can, competing for a whopping $5,000 prize.
Birchip Rifle Club on target
Rifle Clubs from St. Arnaud, Birchip and Robinvale/ Swan Hill competed for the Salvitis Challenge Trophy ... Rifle clubs in north west Victoria have competed for this trophy since 1902, when it was presented by the veterinary supply company Salvitis Pty Ltd.

Bernie among Masters best
Bernie McLoughlan, formerly of Wooroonook, has recently returned from representing Australia in the 2024 World Masters Athletics Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden. The brother of Wooroonook farmers Jeff and Leo McLoughlan, Bernie won a silver medal in the 6000m Cross Country team event with two other Australian runners in the M70-74 Age Group.
Whole town turns to shopping
The whole town garage sale ... turned the town of Donald into a busy shopping centre for astute bargain hunters, and allowed many residents to make a dollar or two from selling unwanted items. As the saying goes: "One man’s trash is another man’s treasure," and the numerous garage sales held in Donald at the weekend seemed like a great big, marvelous treasure hunt...
