The right to healthcare for all

Everyone needs a GP, and the Australian Government must build the country’s health workforce so everyone can get the care they need today, and in the future, says the Royal Australian College of GPs (RACGP) ... RACGP vice-president, Associate Professor Michael Clements, said: “Australia has a world class health system, but investment in building our health workforce to meet growing patient needs is critical. 

Donald 2000 to tackle shortage of housing

Donald 2000 has taken a big step towards reducing the shortage of housing in the town ... Donald Housing Innovations Pty Ltd (DHIP) ... will ask the local community and local employers to invest in housing as a way to overcome a lack of property developers undertaking housing projects in small rural towns. 

Wetlands closed to hunting

The Richardson River, Donald, and Lake Buloke are among the areas closed to hunting for the season beginning tomorrow. The Victorian Government has closed or partially closed thirty-two wetlands to hunting for the 2024 duck season to prevent losses or disturbance to significant numbers of threatened species and breeding waterbirds.

Jacob’s ambassadorial role

At the 2023 Donald Show Jacob Donnellon was awarded the Junior Rural Ambassador Award, which enabled him to compete at the Wimmera Group final of the competition held in Dimboola on March 15 ... The final question asked of the contestants was: “How would you get more people to volunteer at your show?” Jacob’s response was spot on; all in the crowd sat nodding their head in agreement.

James Phelps Memorial and replica plough: history for all to see

Maureen Donnellon. James Phelps established his blacksmith’s foundry at Birchip’s five ways in 1890 ... Both plough and monument were first unveiled for the Centenary of Birchip in 1982 and it is wonderful to see them back where they belong, this time, together ... The replica plough has been painstakingly restored by the Birchip Men’s Shed

St. Arnaud’s “almost” Bird-of-Paradise

Anne Hughes. The ground-walking, weak-flying birds you see on your trip down the Sunraysia Highway to Ballarat are one of Australia’s most amazing birds - the White-winged Chough (pron. chuff). With their sooty-black livery, startling ruby-red eyes and, when they take to the air, black-edged white wings they are obviously not crows (we don’t have ’em down here) or ravens either.

Some practical tips for being prepared

At recent Birchip and Wycheproof Probus Club meetings, an intriguing question from the Buloke Shire Council’s Community Recovery Team kicked off an essential conversation: “If you had to leave your home in a hurry, what would you take?” This question opened up a broader discussion on emergency preparedness, emphasising the need to know what to pack and where to find reliable information.
