Donald Dixon and the Hemmant tannery
Douglas Leighton Kesteven. From the beginning of European settlement in Australia tanning was a critical industry. The first factory in Australia was Wilshire’s tannery in 1803, earlier than flour or woollen mills. Leather was critical for shoes, horse and bullock transport, shipping and, of course, for making cat-of-nine tails to whip convicts ... Donald Dixon’s Hemmant tannery was one of the biggest from 1960 to 1980.
Richmond Landcare: Impacts of 2022 floods
Richmond Landcare, in collaboration with Border Ranges, Richmond Valley Landcare Network, and the Department of Planning and Environment, is proud to announce the release of a compelling video documenting the Environmental Impacts of the 2022 Flood Disaster on the Richmond River Catchment. The video aims to raise awareness and promote sustainable land management, by showcasing the devastating ecological consequences of the 2022 floods in the region.
What is happening at the Anglican Church of St Matthew’s
Gina Murray. We are going through a time of change within our church. Our Rector (i.e. the Rector for the whole Parish of Lismore) has relocated to Gosforth and we are currently without a full time incumbent ... We are a very small congregation (usually about 15) and three years ago, the Grafton Diocese gave us notice that we had three years to increase our numbers or face closure.
Rous weeds
Kidney-leaf mud plantain (Heteranthera reniformis) is an aquatic weed that was brought to Australia as a decorative pond plant. It has since washed into our freshwater waterways where it slows the movement of water, impedes the growth of native water plants, and reduces the food supply for aquatic life.
Female footballers hit the target
More than half of Dunoon United FC’s footballers this season are female - and it’s believed this is first time any club in the region has achieved the feat. "After years of pushing female participation we’ve finally broken the 50 per cent barrier," said club president Simon Webster.
