The thrill of the hill

His first attempt at the Mount Tarrengower Historic Hillclimb was too long ago to remember (“I think about 20 years ago”) but Hein Otten is still excited to race in the 2025 competition, which takes place over this weekend of Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 October. In fact, it was this unique event that brought Hein to the area.

Beehive Chimney: a case study

Historian and President of Maldon Museum and Archives Association Derek Reid delivered a paper at the Australasian Mining History Association conference in Broken Hill on Wednesday 3 September. His presentation, called 'The Beehive Mine Chimney: Maldon's Mining Memorial' was reportedly well received by attendees and delegates, who expressed concern about heritage and maintenance in relation to the chimney.

Local lad snares Snoop Dogg

Regular readers of the Tarrangower Times do not expect reportage about the AFL Grand Final or an international rap star but it turns out that there is an unexpected link. Local resident Helen Butcher has advised that her son managed to contact Snoop Dogg — here to perform at the biggest footy game of the year — and arrange a meeting and recording session on Friday 26 September.

New home for horse trough

Maldon Heritage Network has found a new home for the horse trough that sat for many years in front of what is now the hardware shop ... trough is marked 'Donated by Annis & George Bills Australia' which means it has an interesting history. The Bills were successful in business in the late 1800s and ahead of their time as compassionate campaigners for animal rights.

Rally against ESVF in Bendigo

Dozens of fire trucks and hundreds of people gathered at Weeroona Oval in Bendigo on Sunday 14 September to protest against the State Government’s recently introduced Emergency Services Volunteer Fund (ESVF). Organised by the CFA Volunteers Group, the protest attracted people from across the region...
