AB 'Banjo' Paterson

An entirely different High Country experience will soon be available for locals and visitors alike to learn more about our region through the writings of one Australia's most famous poets. The Banjo Paterson High Country Trail will connect the landscapes that inspired the poet's iconic verse in the Victorian High Country such as The Man from Snowy River.

Wendy Free. Allora, the best little town on the Downs will make history again - be a part of the 125th anniversary of Banjo Paterson's visit to our town. Yes, Banjo Paterson was indeed in our town presenting a political speech on March 16th 1901 in the Protestant Hall.

Honor Auchinleck. What would acclaimed author Elyne Mitchell have said about the 2025 MSRBF Art and Photography and Elyne Mitchell Photo Story Awards’ theme ‘The Man or the Myth’? As her daughter I will tell you some of what I remember. Elyne spoke to people on both sides of the High Country - in the Monaro and the Upper Murray - who remembered Banjo Paterson.

Artist Simon White’s mural ‘The Men and their Mounts’ in Corryong tells the story of the bush horses or brumbies and the stockmen who mustered and brought them down from the High Country and the bush-covered hills surrounding the Upper Murray before the First World War. The breeders of the Remounts and Walers often turned the young horses out into the bush to toughen them up and then brought them back in as four-year-olds for sale to buyers for the British Army in India.

Kevin Markwell. Workers involved in the refurbishment of Kyogle Memorial Hall have made an incredible discovery. When they pulled out an old timber cupboard in one of the dressing rooms, they discovered an old notebook sitting among the rat nests and dust.

Notebooks, illustrations, photographs, letters and transcripts of some of our best-loved songs, poems and stories have been brought together for the first time. Banjo's great-grandson and sole executor of the poet's literary estate, Alistair Campbell, has curated this rare collection and provides intimate commentary on his famous relative.
