Great teamwork at Wilcannia Post Office
It's always nice to drop in at the Wilcannia Post Office because the staff are so warm hearted, friendly and helpful. There's often time between customers for a quick chat and a joke so it's a cheery atmosphere as well as being an efficient service for our community ... Baaka Cultural Centre completed?
The building has been open for public viewing on a couple of occasions but not well advertised. The Architect, David Kaunitz visited Wilcannia recently with a professional photographer, and has kindly sent us some good photos including inside views.
Making a place of peace and welcome: ‘Kalthi Kiirrakiirra Garden’
Lindy King is helping to maintain a wonderful community garden on the piece of land next to her home. Her sister Tammy suggested that a garden would turn that land into a nice peaceful place ... 'The peaceful spirits of our Ancestors and all our people who've passed away wander along the river and around the garden, and their spirits are making it a peaceful place.'
Federal Election 2025 – Wilcannia polling place 1st preference results
Bob Wilson of the Indigenous - Aboriginal Party of Australia (IAPA) got the most 1st preference votes in our town.
Wilcannia women join Ivanhoe and show ‘em how it’s done
7 women from Wilcannia have joined the Ivanhoe Hens for this season’s Proten Community Cup competition. This was round 1 and the Ivanhoe Hens whooped the Goolgowri Rabbitohs 34 –10. Next game sees the women travel to Barellan.
Barkandji community in Wilcannia documents critically endangered species living and breeding in the old town weir
Sarah Martin. A project documenting Barkandji knowledge of the Baaka river and floodplains has been ongoing for about 6 months. It has included a large oral history project which collected knowledge from Barkandji and kin about fish traps, fishing, the floodplains, and how they have changed so much over the last few decades.
Why so many SES resources in town?
...Lots of SES boats, big trucks and volunteers in town ... Water is heading our way but many local people are commenting that the response is over the top ... The river is expected to peak at 9.6 metres in the next week or so.
