Pixie Hanson wins at NSW Surf Life Saving Championships

Luke & Dani. For those of you who remember Pixie Hanson running laps of the airstrip before school (with Elsie, Millie, Ruby and Gale), or charging down Intermediate Hill, or blitzing the LHICS cross country race, you may have wondered why she was always moving faster than the rest of us.

Fifth Sea Slug Census 2022

Steve Smith and Ian Hutton. Thanks to everyone who participated in the 5th Lord Howe Island Sea Slug Census. While conditions were challenging, we nevertheless managed to find and photograph 61 species. Seven of these are first records for the island.

New LHI brewery opening

Timmy Maxwell. We are open! What a journey it’s been up until the point we poured our first beer four weeks ago! As with many great things on this island, it all started with a simple idea. We wanted to brew fresh beer and a create a great place to enjoy it in.

Lord Howe Island Distilling Co. partner with the NSW Waratahs

The NSW Waratahs has welcomed Lord Howe Island Distilling Co on board as the official Gin and Vodka partner of the NSW Waratahs. Lord Howe Island Distilling Co started by two mates, Anthony Riddle and Christian Young, are celebrating the companies’ achievements and are excited to see their award-winning spirits both on the national and international stage. Their very popular Lord Howe Island Gin made with botanicals from the UNESCO World Heritage Island, is a boutique, small batch world class drop.

St Gregs comes to LHI

LHI welcomed St Gregory’s College to the island last week to celebrate our annual Discovery Day. Assistant Principal, Mr. Joel Weekes, and Director of Boarding, Mr. Luke Morrissey travelled to the island to represent the College. LHI currently has 6 young men boarding at St Gregory’s in grades 8 through to 11, and a long history of young men attending the College from the island.

Tsunami warnings issued for Lord Howe Island as Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano erupts

At 3:10pm AEDT on Saturday 15 January 2022 the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano (near Tonga) erupted with a blast so powerful that it caused a shock wave that was heard on Lord Howe Island that evening and reached the other side of the planet.

Lord Howe Island Museum news

The Museum has had a number of donations recently ... The most recently donated item, in January 2022, is an original 1795 lithograph of Admiral,  Lord Howe – from whom, of course, the island gets its name.
