Michelle Daw. Barunga West Council plans to create 230 residential allotments between Fisherman Bay and Port Broughton to meet demand and ease the local housing shortage. Council received approval from Minister for Planning Nick Champion to start the process to rezone 26 hectares of farming land from rural to residential on Friday, May 5.
Greening up the Copper Coast
Two community gardens could soon be available to residents on the Copper Coast. The proposed garden lots at Pol green Park, Moonta, and Hughes Street, Wallaroo, are set to be guided by community consultation.
Shared paths fully complete
Fin Hansen. A shared path for cycling, walking and running on the Copper Coast has been fully connected. The final stages of Copper Coast Council’s $1.6 million project were completed when the final section from Cornish Terrace to Magazine Road, Wallaroo, was sealed recently. The region’s trail network spans about 25 kilometres and links the Kadina to Wallaroo Copper Rail Trail with the Wallaroo to Moonta Shared Path, which finishes/starts at the Moonta Tourist Office on Blanche Terrace.
Land staying in state hands
Patrick Goldsmith. Five troublesome parcels of unalienated Crown Land within the Yorke Peninsula Council area will stay in the care and control of the state government after discussions regarding the environmental impacts of increased visitation numbers ... Unalienated Crown Land is public land which is owned and managed by the state government, giving council no authority over the activity which takes place on it.
Short’s superb start
Peter Argent. Two-time Yorke Peninsula Mail Medal winner Murphy Short made his SANFL league debut for Port Adelaide on Sunday, May 1. Short took to the ground for the second annual Russell Ebert Tribute Match against West Adelaide at Loxton Oval.
We will remember – Thousand poppies bloom at Port Broughton
Michelle Daw. A field of 1000 handcrafted poppies and wooden crosses made a poignant sight at Port Broughton for Anzac Day. The crosses were laid out in a grid on the foreshore lawns to reflect overseas war graves of Australian service personnel. Crocheted or knitted poppies in three colours – red to commemorate fallen servicemen and women, purple in remembrance of war service animals, and white to remember all the casualties of war, both civilians and armed forces – adorned the crosses.
Bute PO posts solid results
Michelle Daw. Bute's post office has the potential to become a thriving, privately run, business in the future, thanks to strong results achieved in the past decade under the management of Barunga West Council. That was the assessment included in a report by CEO Maree Wauchope, tabled at council’s April meeting. Â
Masters to make history
Fin Hanson. SA Masters Games is set to return to the Copper Coast in 2024. It will be the third time the Copper Coast has hosted the event in four years and the first time in SA Masters Games history a region has hosted in back-to-back years.
