Farm rates pain

Primary producers and other residents have packed the Yorke Peninsula Council gallery to witness an impassioned debate about whether farmers should be asked to pay an increased rate across the next financial year. The special council meeting, held at Minlaton on Wednesday, May 22, became heated at times as councillors argued about whether to charge farmers higher rates than they currently pay to help cover the costs of services such as road maintenance.
100 mile man
Wilson McShane. Twenty-three hours and 56 minutes. A lot can be achieved in this time, but few can say they have run 100 miles, or about 160 kilometres, in such a short timeframe. But this is what Kadina man Scott Martin achieved on Saturday, May 13, when he won the Irrational SOUTH 100 Miler through the Flinders Ranges.
Mine mission – Moonta Mines incident under investigation
Sarah Herrmann. With a crucial bid looming to have our unique Moonta Mines precinct World Heritage Listed, more work is needed to improve the safety of the site. Safework SA inspectors have visited Hughes Enginehouse in Moonta Mines as part of ongoing inquiries into an incident that occurred earlier this month.
Paws up for puppy program
Michelle Daw. About 50 people showed their interest in helping to nurture the guide dogs of the future when they took part in a puppy raising seminar in Moonta this month. The event was held by Guide Dogs SA/ NT at the Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia Copper Coast sub branch ... It is the first time the puppy raising program has been extended beyond metropolitan Adelaide.

A natural phenomenon captured the attention of night owls and early birds across southern Australia on the weekend. Aurora Australis, also known as the southern lights, is a natural display of vivid colours in the sky caused by geomagnetic storms.
Driving force behind truck delivery
Michelle Daw. The efficiency and sustainability of high productivity, heavy vehicles should be taken into account when responding to the challenges of maintaining roads. That’s one of the main points made in a developing submission representing a dozen  farming and transport businesses in response to the Heavy Vehicle Access Strategy proposed by Yorke Peninsula Council.

Wilson McShane. Snowtown residents say recent speculation about changing the town’s name has been blown out of proportion and the name is here to stay for the foreseeable future ... Snowtown Progress Association chair Derryn Stringer ... said last week his initial comments about Snowtown considering changing its name had been blown out of proportion.
