Reminiscing about the post

The phrase ‘learning curve’ suggests a gentle incline, but when Jan Elliott and Lee Mead talk about their journey to becoming Postmistresses, they describe a very steep slope indeed. They have recently been reflecting upon their six years running Maldon Post Office, between 2006 and 2012, in light of the repaint of the Main Street pillar box.

Newstead primary goes Gaga

A great partnership driven by students at Newstead Primary School has resulted in a fun new facility in the school playground. The 2024 senior leadership group approached Newstead Men’s Shed to build a Gaga Pit… but first they had to explain what it was!

On location, behind the scenes

As excitement builds for another Hollywood production filming in our region, the Tarrangower Times wanted to find out all about the behind-the-scenes processes involved. Emily Owens is Executive Producer and CEO of Toffee Studios, which has recently been host to the filming of the new Netflix show, Apple Cider Vinegar and the 2025 AACTA (Australian Academy of Cinema, Television and the Arts) award-winning film, Better Man.

Maldon Bakery’s lush outdoor area is now readily accessible due to a newly surfaced ground and there’s a special new reason to visit the garden ... a collaborative effort by the Maldon Men’s Shed and a local artist has brought the cute bakery ‘Baker’ logo to life so visitors can snap a selfie souvenir.

Fire report

The local CFA teams are incredible: knowledgeable, brave and hardworking. The community is so fortunate to have them on standby during this period of extended hot weather, which is expected to continue for at least the next week.

Golden delicious!

The 2025 Maldon Twilight Dinner was a dazzling event under a clear, starry sky on Saturday 18 January. Attendees glistened in a variety of outfits along a golden spectrum of glitzy glam to gleefully garish. (There was a particular trend for sparkly top-hats).

Health networks: mixed reactions

News that the State Government had grouped health services into Local Health Service Networks was met with distrust and derision from members of the opposition parties, but our local health provider, Dhelkaya Health, responded positively ... The Tarrangower Times contacted Dhelkaya Health to try and understand the ways in which the changes would affect local patients and staff.

Railway seeks help after theft

The Victorian Goldfields Railway (VGR) is asking the public for assistance to find stolen vintage equipment and will be sourcing funds after a devastating break-in last week. Castlemaine Police were called out to Muckleford Station after a VGR volunteer worker discovered the theft of equipment and railway fittings worth hundreds of thousands of dollars...

Fire exposes risk of chicken farm waste

The management, storage and disposal of farm waste products has become a focus after residents reportedly discovered a smouldering fire in a chicken litter stockpile last week. A resident in the Baringhup/Carisbrook area says they discovered evidence of self-combustion in a pile of chicken farm waste following a day of Total Fire Ban in the district, expressing concern that it could happen again.

Summer timetable: On track!

It is a sensational time of year to enjoy a trip on the heritage train between Maldon and Castlemaine and adjustments have been made to ensure maximum safety for passengers and residents ... Dolphina Truter and Paul Carnes from Ballarat enjoyed a ride in First Class last weekend as a spur-of-the-moment outing and both were full of praise for the experience.
