Making Maldon a business hub

An upcoming business expo plans to put Maldon on the map at the centre of a network of small towns ... “This expo is not just for Maldon, but to connect with other small towns. Most resources go to larger towns. We need to start the conversation regarding resources such as knowledge, training and opportunities; what do we need to do to build economic opportunities for small towns?”: Luz Restropo OAM.

Glorious gothic gathering

The Goldfields Gothic Festival took place last weekend and was once again a perfectly sombre, solemn and melancholy event; attendees had a wonderful time and the organisers declared it a success … Under the steam of Peter Thompson and a number of key helpers — including Sasha Cuha, Gabrielle Kelly and a crew wearing top hats — most of the main events in 2024 took place at the Maldon Vintage Machinery and Museum.

Wearable art turning heads in Maldon Gallery

Michelle Dorian. The delicate creations displayed in Maldon’s MANet Gallery are intricate, sculptural artworks and they are also hats. The wearable pieces were created by Noelle Elizabeth, who trained in Fine Arts at Ballarat University before pursuing a passion for historical headgear.

Burst water main

Many residents on the south side of Maldon came home to find that their taps were not issuing water last Friday afternoon ... Troy Waterhouse, aptly named, exceptionally good-natured and covered in mud, spent at least an hour in the sludgy pit by the side of the road, scooping out water and fixing the main so that water delivery was restored to residents in reasonable time.

Taking steps to connect in winter

The attendees at the Newstead Midwinter Dance were very keen to dance. On such a chilly and wet night, a certain level of zest was required to even leave the house; Saturday’s crowd showed enthusiasm in abundance.

Maldon and beyond: Really Local conversations

An interactive conversation between Maldon locals and the current Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Mount Alexander Shire will take place at Maldon Neighbourhood Centre this Sunday 21 July from 2pm. Coordinated by the volunteer-run group Really Local, the event is billed as a ‘genuine community discussion’ to which everyone in the area is invited.

International design publication BUILD, which is focused on the construction, engineering, architecture and design markets, has recognised a local company in its Architecture Awards 2024. Drawing South Homes Pty Ltd, based in Maldon, has been named Best Boutique Architecture & Interior Design Practice 2024 - Victoria and recognised as Best Completed Residential Project 2024 (Victoria) for its work on a Mornington Peninsula home. Glam up for the return of Goldfields Gothic Festival

The program for the 2024 Goldfields Gothic Festival has been announced and it promises to be another celebration of all things mysterious and darkly glamorous. Spread across the weekend of Friday 2 August to Sunday 4 August, the festival will feature poetry, parlour games, spectres and stories plus magic and lots of music.
