Rural doctor update – Government still paying locums, not locals
Chris Oldfield. The SA State Government is remaining tight lipped about how much it has spent on Locum GPs as its rural doctor crisis rolls into 2022. The Naracoorte News asked Health Minister Stephen Wade, via his media advisor, if he was working on the SA rural doctor crisis and, how much had been spent on locum doctors since contracts with the state’s rural GPs expired more than a year ago.
Community spirit ensures permanent fire water
Chris Oldfield. Lucindale will never run out of fire water again thanks to a group of local farmers, backed by Naracoorte businesses, Rotary and Lions Clubs. A tank of around 100,000 litres boasts a fully equipped bore, offering a permanent water supply to protect the area. It is just over a year since Lucindale ran out of water fighting the January 11, 2021, Blackford fire.
Vehicle fire wreaks havoc
Gabrielle Duykers. More than 7000 hectares of land has been burnt and about 6000 livestock lost in the aftermath of a car fire that lost control on New Year’s Eve. The inferno was sparked when a vehicle caught fire and set grass alight in Wrattonbully at around 1.30pm on Friday, December 31.
The brave fight MND
Taylah Pomery. On Sunday 28th of November the Debbie Davis School of Dance hosted the Fight MND Dance-a-thon at the Naracoorte Town Hall. In total, the event has made approximately $7,900 to go to the Fight MND charity, inspired by beloved community figure Peter Grieve ... The event highlighted the immense generosity of the Naracoorte and Bordertown community with over 80 local business donating prizes.
Govt/Dr dispute close to being resolved

As Christmas looms, and the final 2021 edition of this newspaper goes to print, high level negotiations were taking place between the SA Government health officials, the Australian Medical Association and the Rural Doctors Association of SA. The News understands the intention on both sides was to resolve the rural doctor crisis crippling country SA. And in good faith, for three of the five unfilled 24-hour shifts on the Naracoorte hospital roster, local doctors are working together.
Naracoorte’s meth “doctor”
More than 50 dealers of methamphetamine are currently active in the Naracoorte area, with one allegedly moving $14,000 worth per week, it has been claimed. In recent weeks, The News has been approached by several concerned residents claiming consumption of the illicit drug is growing in the local area. One such source, who spoke to The News on the condition of anonymity, claimed more than 50 active methamphetamine dealers were operating in Naracoorte, with peddlers also selling the product in Lucindale, Bordertown, Keith, and Mount Gambier.
Millicent Saleyards saved by community

Faced with powerful deputations from members of the community at the Special Council meeting on Tuesday 30th November 2021, Wattle Range Council moved a motion to keep the Millicent Saleyards open. The vote was unanimous. The Special Council meeting was scheduled to provide elected members with an update on the operations of the Millicent Saleyards. Included in the agenda was a prepared Millicent Saleyards Review authored by CEO Ben Gower, five deputations and numerous submissions from the public.
Coonawarra cabernet crowned country’s best
Gabrielle Duykers. A Coonwarra winery has won gold in a national wine competition, making history as the first winery outside the Margaret River region to claim the prize ... The prestigious competition saw the Yalumba 2019 'The Menzies' Cabernet Sauvignon take out both the top gold of the Coonawarra Wine Region and the overall trophy for Australia’s finest Cabernet.
