Padthaway WAB members and friends learnt about Red Tailed Black Cockatoos

Virginia Gale. On President Beth Gale’s patio we all gathered together for a quick meeting as there wasn’t a lot to report. We were then joined by Skye MacPherson, Project Coordinator for South Eastern Red Tailed Black Cockatoos (Calyptorhynchus banksii) ... The Red Tailed Black Cockatoo are on the endangered list and there are about 1500 in the South East.

Forgotten athlete: Robert Leitch

Marion Hextall. A Naracoorte athlete of the early 1900s whose records were compared with those of Olympians has been largely forgotten today. Robert Leitch later became a guide at the Caves, but prior to that he was renown as an outstanding long-distance athlete ... His name began to appear in 1903 when he was 20 years old, winning one-mile and half-mile races at athletic meetings in Naracoorte, Kingston and Mount Gambier, and in 1906 he established a South Australian record for a one-mile race.

There’s something about Bool Lagoon

Chris Oldfield. The birds, bats and frogs of Ramsar-listed Bool Lagoon have their own calls and stories. Those stories will be shared when Bool Lagoon and Hacks Lagoon (currently dry) next have water. ... “So, finding a way of sharing that site with people – it's important to me. It seemed like a good fit to be doing environmental eco tours at Bool Lagoon to share that wonderful site with people”: Dr Abigail Goodman.

Community spirit showcased at Padthaway

Chris Oldfield. The community spirit of Tatiara District Council was on show last week when its monthly meeting was held in Padthaway’s sporting complex. Some of the many key issues raised included road safety, a lack of child care and wishes for a school hall and pool. The issues were raised by Padthaway Primary School’s Years 5 and 6 class.

$430,000 outstanding for NLC

Rates and service charges totalling $430,322.21 were outstanding and owed to Naracoorte Lucindale Council on June 30, 2022. The amount is around $24,000 less than that left outstanding a year ago – June 30, 2021.

$5.4m masterplan for swimming lake

Chris Oldfield. Naracoorte Lucindale Council will soon have another masterplan – this time for the swimming lake ... The masterplan includes things like coin operated hot showers, playground and splash area, BBQs with shelter and table setting, exercise equipment, disabled car park and access ramps, café with outdoor area...

Plenty of pluck – and more pigeons please!

The Naracoorte Poultry & Pigeon Club held their Championship Show at the Naracoorte Showgrounds on Sunday 24th, with 200 pens displaying the finest of local ducks, chickens and pigeons. The club reported it was a pleasure to host Judge Brendan Lloyd from Victoria who awarded Champion Bird of Show to L. Barber.
