New alliance champions regional Australia
More than 30 CEOs from the most influential peak bodies in the country joined forces in Canberra on Tuesday, for the historic launch of the National Alliance for Regionalisation. Established by the Regional Australia Institute (RAI), CEO Liz Ritchie says this new Alliance is the first of its kind in this country, spanning business, health, education, infrastructure and environment. It aims to better position the regions to reach their potential.
There’s more to love at this year’s field days
The ‘Love Life’ wellbeing marquee will be buzzing with excitement as people from around the region gather for the second Upper Murray Agricultural Field days to be held in Corryong on April 12th and 13th, 2023. The event is being organised by Emergency Recovery Victoria (ERV) to promote wellbeing and encourage field days’ goers to "love their life."
Haines pressures government for farmer support
Federal Member for Indi, Helen Haines, has moved a motion in the House of Representatives calling on the Parliament to act on the threat posed to Australia’s agricultural sector by climate change and to take action to support farmers. Dr Haines has proposed a network of 200 agricultural extension officers be funded by government to provide context-specific, trusted and neutral educational outreach services and advice on the technology, products and practices that will help farmers lower their emissions.
Haines walks the tricky path
The 2022 McKinnon Prize in Political Leadership has recognised the power of sustained commitment to collaboration and relationship-building in advancing a political vision, with Senator Penny Wong and Member for Indi, Helen Haines, named as recipients of the prize. In a year of seismic change in Australia’s politics, the two recipients’ dedication to achieving genuine impact in their roles stood out among exceptionally strong shortlists according to the selection panel.
Trainer goes back to back
Midway through the Towong Cup on Elveena, apprentice jockey, Hannah Edgley, was thinking how lucky she was that the horse’s trainer Ben Brisbourne was not on track as the five-year-old mare ($4.60) travelled wide at the rear of the field ... "All I could think of during the run was the spray I was going to get from Ben": Hannah Edgley laughed.
Marching on saves lives
Corryong cafè owner, Stuart Spratt, is undertaking another charity walk next week to raise awareness of veterans’ mental health issues. He intends to complete the 130-kilometre trek from Boathaven, near Wodonga, to Corryong via Cudgewa over four days, starting on Tuesday and expects to be joined by up to 15 walkers.
Riders rapt to return for first rally
The Upper Murray Pony Club (UMPC) made a well received return to Corryong on Sunday, holding its first rally day since the 2019-2020 bushfires and having recently relocated from Tintaldra to the Corryong Recreation Reserve. Club president and Chief Instructor, Heidi Walton, declared the day a huge success with five junior and four adult riders completing the day’s activities.
Corn outstrips other silage
In his 75 years of farming in the Biggara Valley, Keith Whitsed says he has never seen a more impressive crop than the stand of corn currently being grown on the family property with his daughter Marie and son-in-law Dave Colbert. Their first attempt at growing corn for fodder has exceeded their expectations but has also brought with it some unique issues.
