Floods – The road to recovery

In our immediate area, we are lucky: the floods have been and gone while others across the State and beyond are still living with the uncertainty and dangers of rising river levels. For our region, it’s on to the recovery stage.  The Times visited the Baringhup Caravan Park last weekend to view the damage following a massive release of water from Cairn Curran reservoir.

Cairn Curran Sailing Club

Helen Whiteman. After sailing was cancelled the previous weekend for safety reasons, last weekend the weather proved to be excellent for the running of the annual ‘Up the Weir - Jack Ginnivan Trophy’ race in honour of   Jack Ginnivan, who was one of the founding members of the Club.

Protecting our natural heritage

Sometimes, the good things happening in our region have the smallest of beginnings. In this case, it was a letter that Maldon resident Lee Mead sent to her local State Member Maree Edwards.  “It started during the first year of the pandemic when I did a lot more walking around the Maldon Historic Reserve,” Lee said.

Flood emergency

The entire Central Victorian region has been smashed by catastrophic floods, which appear to be more serious and more widespread than the 2010 and 2011 floods. With many regions experiencing record-breaking rains over catchments that were already sodden, the end result has been devastating. Gutters have turned into creeks, creeks into raging rivers and rivers into churning brown oceans ... Geoff Palmer took this photo of the spillway at Cairn Curran last Thursday.

Oil spill

In the midst of dealing with the flood situation, emergency service workers were called out to an oil spill in Maldon last Friday. A significant quantity of waste oil had leaked out from a sump at a Victorian Goldfields Railway workshop and into a neighbouring property.

Maldon & Baringhup Agricultural Show 2022

The crowds flocked to the Racecourse Reserve for the Maldon & Baringhup Agricultural Show last Sunday, which was the first Show to be held following the Covid lockdowns of 2020 and 2021. Organisers were thrilled with the strong turnout, despite the fact that the horse events were cancelled at the last minute due to the soft condition of the ground.

Arts About – Red dots abound

Nancy Whittaker. Don’t miss visiting the David Moore exhibition at the Cascade Art Gallery in Fountain Street, from now until 13 November ... Red dots abound as the works are so popular and covetable. David Moore is a delightful interview subject, erudite and somewhat self-effacing, given his long and dedicated artistic career, which started with a teacher training course at Hawthorn Tech (now Swinburne).

Emergency Expo success

Last Saturday’s Castlemaine Emergency Expo at Castlemaine’s Camp Reserve was a runaway success, with over 30 organisations on the ground giving information and advice on how best to prepare for an emergency. It was a family day out, with many children enjoying the chance to enjoy a range of activities on offer - as well as the opportunity to get up close and personal with big trucks and men and women in interesting uniforms.
