Disheartened, disappointed and disillusioned – that is how Kyogle Council described its response to the break-in at the Mallanganee Lookout. The observatory was only officially opened 10 days ago and the council said it was a devastating blow to have equipment worth $20,000 stolen.
Council chooses company to start work on Mallanganee observatory early next year
Work on the Mallanganee observatory project is expected to start within the first three months of next year. At the Kyogle Council meeting on Monday, December 9, the meeting went into confidential to discuss the tender for the construction of the Mallanganee observatory at the Mallanganee Lookout.
Milky Way sphere design listed for world architecture prize
The ambitious design for the Mallanganee Lookout has been shortlisted at the World Architecture Festival in the Future Projects category ... The description on the festival website says “Mallanganee Lookout is an iconic destination – a place that has the centre of the galaxy crossing overhead”.

The observatory at Mallanganee Lookout will be built out of metal and concrete and will be semi-enclosed, providing the perfect vantage to the views across the Richmond Ranges to the Border Ranges and Wollumbin during the day and the stars overhead at night ... will be positioned on the precise latitude where the centre of the Milky Way crosses directly overhead every day.
