Swell Sisters ”¦ locked down, but not out

A small team of Lower Clarence women have found a great way to do charitable work while they exercise among the waves. ‘Swell Sisters’ – Clair Morton, Shannon Grainger, Emy Alexander and Georgie Smith – are on a mission to raise funds for  SurfAid ¸  which provides “a hand up, rather than a handout, to people in remote communities connected to us through surfing,” says Clair.

Learning to learn online in lockdown

Emma Pritchard. Sitting dutifully at his computer with a copy of his study guide in his hand, Duncan Gray focuses intently on his work ... When asked how he is adjusting to learning from home, Duncan said one of the biggest challenges he is experiencing is waiting for a response from some of his teachers after he asks a question. Sometimes, he has to wait until the next class before he receives a reply.

As the state-wide lockdown continues, Jess Wood, Manager of The Book Warehouse in Grafton, says she has seen an increase in the number of people purchasing books as the community searches for refreshing ways to keep their minds happily occupied during these challenging times.

Among them, is 13-year-old Mae Carroll from Grafton ... Deeply passionate about social justice issues and the vital importance of support for mental health services in regional communities, Miss Carroll said recognising the opportunity to speak openly about topics close to her heart motivated her to apply again.

Lockdown inspires Yamba golfers (sometimes)

David Miles. Playing under lockdown rules is seeing some excellent scores at Yamba Golf & Country Club. The Thursday Stableford saw 151 golfers compete and with many handicaps reduced in the great conditions.

“Doin’ it for Holly” round a big success

Angie Day. Grafton Hockey Association recently hosted a highly successful “Doin’ it for Holly” Round on  Saturday August 14. The day is named in honour of Holly Butcher, a local Graftonian and hockey player who sadly passed away in 2018 at the age of 27 after a battle with Ewings Sarcoma. In her final days, Holly wrote a very moving letter titled “A bit of life advice from Hol” ... One of Holly’s final requests in her letter was to encourage people to become blood donors, so one of the big focuses of the “Doin’ it for Holly” day was the “100 lives Challenge”.

Sowing seeds, growing community

Not too long ago, the space behind the Anglican church building in  Wharf Street, Maclean, was used as a place for vehicles to turn  around; nowadays it’s a vibrant vegie garden, with each raised bed’s  name inspired by ‘Gifts of the Spirit’ (Galatians 5:22-23) and the  garden, itself, christened ‘Fruits of the Spirit’ ... “It’s worthwhile, viable, beneficial to the community and marvellous for those of any age who want to get out and share life with others.”
