Railway memories fading fast
Ross McGuinness. Only three elements of Denmark’s railway exist today nearly 60 years since the closure of the line. Two are still clearly visible while the third, the historic 1897 turntable, is now mainly covered. The turntable and adjacent engine pit, sometimes referred to as the ash pit, are located on the bridge end of the station site.
Locals rule on their home hill
The Denmark Mountain Bike Club hosted the ï¬rst round of the State downhill series on Sunday, March 5 and local riders dominated the podium atop Lapko Road. Almost 100 riders from across WA made the journey to Denmark for the event now in its third year.

Rules changed in bid to boost accommodation
Ancillary dwellings or granny flats and detached habitable rooms in the Denmark shire will be limited to 70sqm and 30sqm of outdoor living space ... The Shire wanted to streamline granny flat development in a effort to combat the growing rental crisis in the town.
Friends, family join Suzie’s fight
Serena Kirby. About 30 people volunteered to have their heads shaved before 200 supporters at a recent ovarian cancer fundraiser at the Denmark Boating and Angling Club. The ‘Shaving Noggins for Suzie’ event was held as a way to show support for lifelong local Sue Sinagra who is ï¬ghting Stage 4 ovarian cancer.
Westpac delay welcomed
Patricia Gill. Denmark’s Westpac Bank is among eight regional Westpac banks Australia-wide whose closure has been postponed ... The closure of Westpac would leave the town with one bank operating, BankWest. Denmark’s NAB branch closed on February 9 after scaled-back opening hours and the bank citing a ‘new model’ affecting 114 small regional Australian branches.
Snowboarder climbs world rankings
Serena Kirby. Seventeen-year-old snowboarder Henry Edmondson has had another hectic 12 months ... Having just returned from numerous overseas trips Henry is now ranked second in the Oceania Freeride category for under-18 males and ranked 13th in the world.
Teens raise arson alert
Patricia Gill. Firefighters battled steep terrain and near-inaccessible bush initially resorting to backpack sprays to contain a deliberately lit fire on Mt Hallowell at the weekend. The fire on the northern side of the mountain was reported about 5.30pm on Friday night and was started by teenagers whom Denmark Police say are known to them and have been dealt with.
