SE farmers unite to protect against FMD and Lumpy Disease

Red biosecurity signage will soon mushroom on many farm entrances across the SE, along with wash down facilities for visitors – vets, various contractors, shearers, trucks and stock agents. Even friends and relatives visiting farming families will be required to fill out details about where they have been, and where they will go next.

Plans adapted for native veg and walking trails

Chris Oldfield. Developer Robert Moore has adapted his "high level plan" as a result of feedback regarding native vegetation and walking trails in the North Parklands. The adapted plans will be unveiled on September 21, in the Naracoorte Town Hall ... Mr Moore explained how times had changed for Naracoorte, which had not seen a population increase since the 1970s.

Ag Speak – Experts encourage FMD vigilance

While foot and mouth disease (FMD) remains active in Indonesia, officials there say they hope to bring the outbreak under control by the end of the year thanks to a rollout of vaccinations. The country’s FMD Task Force spokesperson, Professor Wiku Adisasmito, said there had been more than 450,000 cases of FMD confirmed or suspected across 22 of the country’s 37 provinces.

Heart attacks plummet and we lead the nation

In two decades, the number of people who die of a heart attack in our region has plummeted by more than 20 percent – thanks to visiting cardiologist Philip Tideman and longtime rural GPs at Kincraig Medical Clinic. In Naracoorte alone, more than 500 people have benefited from their work. Now Naracoorte and the SE are being recognised nationally and internationally for reducing death rates from heart attacks in country areas.

Permissive alcohol culture the target of region-wide Planet Youth campaign

A region-wide campaign around the permissive alcohol culture by adults towards young people is being planned by Substance Misuse Limestone Coast (SMLC) and a Planet Youth community network group. Three Planet Youth network groups have been newly established across the Limestone Coast, including City of Mount Gambier/DC Grant, Penola and Naracoorte, following the release of the second Planet Youth survey data earlier this year.

Holland matters to us

Farmers are told they must reduce their use of fertiliser and they must slash livestock numbers by 50%. These orders have come from their Prime Minister Rutte who is acting on directions from Klaus Schwab.

All fauna and flora to be surveyed

Chris Oldfield. CR Craig McGuire has successfully called for a biological survey of all the native fauna and flora in the North Parklands, regardless of its cost to ratepayers ... Cr McGuire said he wanted “a contractor to do a full biological survey of flora and fauna of the North Parklands to provide council with a baseline understanding of the area’s natural values”.

NLC flags parkland purchase

Chris Oldfield,. Ratepayers might be called on to fund part or all of the North Parklands by the Naracoorte Lucindale Council which will explore options to purchase it. The idea sprouted from a CEO recommendation moved by Cr Monique Crossling, seconded by Cr Tom Dennis, and supported by most councillors. But a final decision will rest with the next elected council, along with whether or not to harvest the pines or develop the area.
