The fall occurred close to the 200-metre mark along the straight, when Dean\u2019s horse veered suddenly towards the inside rail and stumbled. The other jockey involved in the fall was Alana Kelly, who was riding directly behind Dean when it happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The meeting, originally scheduled for Mildura, was placed in an indefinite holding pattern, while awaiting news of the wellbeing of those involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Track support vehicles and medics attended the scene immediately, whilst the mood trackside turned to one of instant concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dean Holland\u2019s injuries were critical, requiring emergency services vehicles and air-lift support which soon attended the scene. Alana miraculously walked away from the incident seemingly unscathed, as well as both horses appearing unharmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The decision amongst those at the meeting was unanimous to abandon the remainder of the meeting, and later, the news of Dean\u2019s death shocked the nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Donald and District Racing Club struggled to find the words to express the heartbreak of its community:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe are utterly devastated for Lucy and Dean\u2019s young family, parents Belinda and Darren, family, friends, fellow riders and colleagues,\u201dsaid the president, Graeme Leishman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe offer our heartfelt condolences at this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDean was a talented jockey who was loved and respected by all who knew him and he had a smile that could light up any room.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
ANZAC Day\u2019s race meetings the following day, at Flemington and Moe, were cancelled and black arm bands were worn by jockeys racing in Sydney, as the tributes for the 34-year-old father of four began to flow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Money has been raised for Dean\u2019s family through a GoFundMe page and the overwhelming support from the public is helping those closest to him through such a difficult time. Thoughts and prayers to all involved following the sudden tragedy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
